Waihi has always been a place of escape. With the owner having spent much of their childhood there, building a new bach wasn’t about making a statement - it was about creating something practical, resilient, and built to last in a demanding coastal environment.
When the original holiday home reached the end of its life, the decision was made to rebuild with longevity front of mind. The result is a relaxed, contemporary bach designed for family, surf, and time together - supported by AXXIS® high-performance steel framing at its core.
Designed by Chris Tate, the bach prioritises simplicity, durability, and flexibility. AXXIS® steel framing was selected to provide a strong, reliable structure that could handle coastal conditions while allowing for efficient construction and open, flowing spaces.
The precision and stability of steel framing supported the clean architectural lines of the home and helped deliver a low-maintenance solution suited to long-term holiday living.
Durability was critical. AXXIS® steel framing is designed for New Zealand conditions and backed by an up to 50-year durability statement, providing confidence that the structure will stand the test of time - particularly in a coastal setting.
AXXIS® also contributes to a healthier home environment. Because steel doesn’t absorb moisture, it won’t support mould growth - an important consideration for a bach that needs to remain comfortable and dependable year-round.
From a design perspective, steel framing allowed greater freedom to create wide, open spaces without compromise, supporting the relaxed, functional layout of the home.
